Malaysian travel blogger’s plea to Ellen DeGeneres goes viral

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26, 2015:

The efforts of Malaysian travel blogger Rayyan Haries (www.thebigsmallboy.com) in feeding Syrian refugees went viral after he turned to social media for crowdsource funding to winter-proof his kitchen on the island of Lesbos in Greece.

Rayyan also turned to American comedian, television host, actress, writer and producer Ellen DeGeneres, hoping she would grant his wish of a warmer winter.

Yahoo Newsroom reported that since it was posted on Facebook on Nov 23, Rayyan’s video had picked up traction, getting more than 400 shares and several commenters tagging DeGeneres in the post hoping she will see it.

In the video, Rayyan said he was not a big non-governmental organisation and instead is just a guy who believes food is hope, and he simply wants to keep feeding people.

“So if you can help us, that’ll be so amazing. Because you always have something for everyone around the world.”

Rayyan, who appeared in the video dressed in a wacky orange animal suit, concluded by requesting for his “number one thing” —  bring Ellen Denegeres to Lesbos, located in the northern Aegean Sea, off the coast of Turkey.

DeGeneres hasn’t responded to Rayyan’s plea yet but that has not stopped Rayyan from raising close to 2,000 pounds sterling (RM12,750)

Rayyan, who calls himself #TheVolunteerCook, has almost 6,000 people following him on Facebook

Forgoing a steady job, 26-year-old Rayyan used all of his three-year savings to be a volunteer in 15 countries.

He has volunteered in several countries affected by disasters such as Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the earthquake in Japan and also Nepal.

Rayyan, who was born in Kuala Lumpur, raised his own funds through part-time jobs in each of the countries visited, such as working in a vegetable garden, as a soap salesman, fruit picker and by writing articles on travel.

The blogger, who has 20,000 followers, has been actively promoting a volunteerism campaign to his readers and the first country he visited was Indonesia four years ago.
