Maari review – a gangster porn

Maari, 2015 is a Tamil action comedy movie directed by Balaji Mohan who gave Kadhalil Soddhapavadhu Eppadi and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum. The leading cast in Maari is Dhanush (Maari), Kajal Aggarwal (Sridevi), Vijay Yesudas (Arjun Kumar) and Robo Shankar (Sanikilamai).

Maari is basically gangster porn which our gangster wannabe machas can jizz at. No dearth in gangsterism glorification in this flick. Full Force ah irukkum.

Maari is a dude in his pettai where nothing can happen in the pettei without his knowledge. When even the police go, “Avane lam naama thode kude mudiyathu saar,” the viewer can gauge Maari’s untouchable status as the area pistha. The full movie goes on to establish that single fact.

Maari blusters, dances, wreaks havoc and utters punch dialogues at every opportunity. His favourite word is “Senjuruven.” Apparently, many machas and Malaysian Indians are bursting with pride because the word ‘senju’ which has Malaysian Indian copyright has gained prominence in India, particularly Tamil Nadu and now is being incorporated in Tamil movies. From Kaththi to Maari using the word ‘senju’ in many modulations, it is expected that the word would be endorsed by Vairamuthu and used by Madhan Karky when writing lyrics. The proudest of all are the admins of Anti Senju Uderan Kes Facebook pages.

Maari-1

The story is nothing new and lacks meat and mostly logic – a gangster who is ironically shown as a good guy and a police officer (Vijay Yesudas) shown as the bad guy. Kajal’s character Sridevi reminded me of Anastasia in 50 Shades of Grey, educated but stupid. And, the comedians who double up as Maari’s kainge, sidekicks and egging up agents indulge in mocking the leading lady, calling her powder moonji. I fully agree that most leading lady character in Tamil movies deserve to be mocked.

There is some resemblance of Aadukalam in Maari. Aadukalam – cock fights (pun unintended, all of you blue minds) Maari – homing pigeon betting. But, unlike the rawness and brilliance of Aadukalam, the depiction of pigeon betting in Maari barely scratches the surface. Like I said, the focus is more on asserting that rowdism rocks and gets you fame, money and girls.

The only difference in Maari is, he rejects Sridevi when she confesses her love for him after sweetly saying a dialogue that good guys can’t be trusted because they will turn bad but bad guys can be trusted because they are true to themselves and others. Logic apa benda tuh aku pon tak faham. So, it can be expected that our Minachis will love karat machas like Maari and I hope those machas toe Maari’s line – reject em powder moonjis because ponnungge life le vantha life eh gaali. Start song with a quarter thanni.

The effects of Tamil movies like Maari are evident in our Indian community. What happened when Maari screening was cancelled in IOI Mall Puchong? But, if I say this, machas won’t admit – they say they treat entertainment as entertainment and kutuk me of imagining things and making stupid conclusions. But, the same machas updated statuses on Facebook that Romeo Juliet movie is the tight slap for money minded girls. Enna Kathey Anneh?

Maari Sappe Maari.
